How much will it cost me to participate in the Hubbard program?
Hubbard Fellows receive a stipend for living expenses and groceries, and a free room. Transportation to the grocery store will also be provided. Since this is an intensive program, Fellows must be available full-time throughout the program and the stipend is intended to enable full-time study.
Can I get an application fee waiver?
There are limited funds available to cover fee waivers. Award of such waiver will be determined by need. Generally, if a student has qualified and received a pell grant, they are eligible for a fee waiver. Documentation of your financial aid award is required. Please contact

How do I make my travel arrangements?
Fellows will need to make their own travel arrangements. Transportation from the airport will be provided. All participants should report to dormitories on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, and should plan to leave the dormitory to return home on Friday, June 29, 2012.
There are very limited funds available to defray travel expenses. Awards will be determined by need. Prior authorization by the Hubbard Program is necessary. If you are accepted into the Hubbard program and wish to apply for travel assistance, please send a short statement describing your need to hubbard-fellows@uiowa.edu by April 13, 2012. Documentation showing such need is required.
I participated in a pre-law program in the past. Am I eligible to participate in this program?
Yes, if you have participated in a summer pre-law program or a PLUS program before, you can participate in this program.
How much time will I spend in classes?
The Hubbard program is intended to be a full-time commitment. By agreeing to participate in the program, you agree that you will neither be employed nor have any other commitments that would prevent you from giving the program your full attention.
The program runs from Tuesday, June 5 through Thursday, June 28, 2012. Hubbard Fellows must agree to participate in all scheduled activities for the entire four week period. Classes will be conducted Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to approximately 4:30 p.m. Please be aware that some programming will be scheduled during evenings and weekends.
What classes will I take and what will I learn?
The program is designed to introduce students to the legal profession, law school, and the law school application process. Courses will consist of a substantive class, a law and legal skills class, a writing class, and an academic skills class. The educational experience will also include opportunities to visit courts, judges and practicing attorneys.

Where will I live while participating in the Hubbard program?
Housing has been arranged in the Mayflower Residence Hall on the University of Iowa campus. Mayflower rooms are arranged in suites of two rooms connected by a shared kitchen and bathroom. There will be four people assigned to each suite (2 per bedroom).
Parking is available at Mayflower Hall on a first-come-first-serve basis.
Mayflower is not far from the law school, where classes will be conducted. Students participating will also have access to many of Iowa’s facilities, including lounge and study areas.
Do I have to live in the dormitory?
Yes. To build a sense of community among students in the Hubbard program, we expect that all program participants live together in the dormitory. If you already live in Iowa City, and living in the dormitory would impose a serious burden, you should contact us at
hubbard-fellows@uiowa.edu. Any participant granted permission to live outside of the dormitory will be required to participate in scheduled activities, including those that take place in the dormitory.
How will I get to the law school?
The Mayflower Residence Hall is a scenic 20-25 minute walk from the College of Law. A free campus bus is also available. There is VERY LIMITED parking available near the law school for a fee.
What type of clothing should I bring?
Iowa City is known for its beautiful, but hot summers. The weather in the Midwest can be unpredictable. In addition to the usual clothing for hot summer days, you should expect some cool days and evenings. The typical range in June is 60-85 degrees. The classroom might also be cooler due to the air conditioning. Iowa summers can be rainy, so be sure to bring an umbrella.
You can dress casually for class, but you should, however, bring at least one or two outfit(s) suitable for business occasions.
What will we do for fun?
Iowa City is a great college town. It’s been consistently ranked as one the top small towns in America, and top 5 college towns. You will have plenty of time to do things with your new friends.
Will this program get me into law school?
No. There will be sessions that inform Hubbard Fellows about the application process and choosing a law school. Students must be admitted into a law school based on their own merits.
Will this program prepare me for the LSAT?
Students should note that the Hubbard Program is NOT intended to serve as an LSAT preparation course. The goals of the program are to introduce fellows to the legal profession, to assist them with analytic and logical reasoning skills, to enhance problem solving skills, to develop critical reading skills, to promote active listening, and to facilitate advocacy.
How many Hubbard Fellows are chosen?

How are Hubbard Fellows selected? Is there a minimum required GPA or SAT/ACT score?
No. We evaluate each file to ultimately arrive at a diverse group of students. Each applicant is evaluated based on his/her personal statement, transcript and GPA, letter of recommendation, and standardized test scores.
When can I apply?
December 12, 2011 - March 19, 2012 (postmarked by March 19).
Who is eligible to participate in the program?
College students enrolled at two- and four-year institutions, in all majors and from all backgrounds, are invited to apply. Students cannot already have a bachelor’s degree when participating in the program.
