Law faculty may request items from other libraries by contacting the Interlibrary Loan staff. The Law Library participates in many interlibrary lending networks through which to obtain the items requested.
UI Campus Libraries (see also Retrieval & Delivery Services)
The University libraries provide a service that delivers requested items to the Law Library once each day, Monday-Friday. Once an item has been requested through this system, it may take several days before it is delivered to the Law Library. Items received via this courier will be routed to faculty mailboxes or placed on the "Hold Shelf" in the Law Library. Books from other campus libraries may be returned to the Law Library Circulation Desk or directly to the lending campus library. If the Law Library staff returns the item through the courier system and the item is lost or damaged in transit, the faculty person remains responsible for any fines imposed by the lending library and must deal directly with that library. Materials from other campus libraries may not be renewed by telephone. The item(s) must be sent or brought back to the lending library in order to be renewed. This is a University Libraries policy.
Warning: If faculty receive a recall notice from University Libraries, return the item at once. A four dollar ($4) per day fine is charged for items returned late. If the item is of continuing interest, it may be borrowed by interlibrary loan; contact the Interlibrary Loan staff.
Other Libraries
The Law Library is a member of the Online Computer Library Center (OCLC). OCLC has over 72,035 participating institutions; 740 of the OCLC participating institutions are law libraries. Due to this membership, the Law Library has borrowing privileges from the collections of other member institutions. Faculty should send their requests in writing to the Interlibrary Loan staff.Because delivery may take as long as three to four weeks, give the Law Library staff as much lead time as possible.
The membership agreement also may provide for free photocopies of articles. The Law Library has limited funds to cover additional charges unless those charges are excessive. If research is related to a grant, provide a signed requisition form with the grant number so that charges can be billed to the appropriate grant fund.
