- Hyde, Charles Cheney, International Law Chiefly as Interpreted and Applied by the United States (2d. rev. ed., 1947), a three-volume set that examines U.S. views on international law up to 1941.

Research Aides (Good materials to supplement/explain treatises and International Law Yearbooks)
- Bieber's Dictionary of Legal Abbreviations (5th ed.). This work includes English-language abbreviations for many foreign agencies, organizations, periodicals and other publications.
- Encyclopedia of Public International Law. This highly regarded source contains scholarly articles about various aspects of public international law. This is a good place to begin research.
- Oxford Companion to Law. This one-volume British encyclopedia provides information on many foreign and international topics.
- Osmanczyk, The Encyclopedia of the United Nations and International Agreements (3rd ed.). A very good source that provides the text of agreements, information on international concepts, and a review of the major international organizations.
- Bledsoe, Robert L., & Boleslaw A. Boczek, The International Law Dictionary (1978). This dictionary provides fairly long definitions and is useful for getting an overview of international law topics. Entries are alphabetical under broad subject headings, with cross references to related terms. Boczek's International Law: A Dictionary (2005) follows a similar format.
- Cardiff Index to Legal Abbreviations This website allows you to search for the meaning of abbreviations for English language legal publications from the British Isles, the Commonwealth and the United States, including those covering international and comparative law.
- Fox, James R., Dictionary of International and Comparative Law (3rd ed.). This dictionary gives brief definitions, citations to further sources, and listings of acronyms and popular names; a good resource for quick answers.
- Parry, Clive, and John P. Grant, The Encyclopaedic Dictionary of International Law (2nd ed.). This is an excellent and reliable source, with alphabetically arranged entries defining and explaining the terms, phrases and subject matter of international law.
- World Dictionary of Legal Abbreviations. This dictionary, which is regularly supplemented, includes abbreviations in English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish. It can be difficult to use because you need to know what language an abbreviation is in before you can look it up.

Treatises (authoritative scholarly treatments of international law)
- Oppenheim, L., Oppenheim's International Law (Robert Jennings and Arthur Watts, eds., 9th ed. 1992) is an updated version of a classic treatise on international law.
- Restatement (Third) of the Foreign Relations Law of the United States (1987) and Restatement (Second) of Conflict of Laws (1971-88) provide authoritative explanations of U.S. practice; both are updated with pocket parts, and available on Nexis Lexis and Westlaw.
- Janis, Mark W., An Introduction to International Law (4th ed. 2003) introduces the subject and explains the basic concepts and issues.
- Bowett's Law of International Institutions (Philippe Sands; Pierre Klein; D W Bowett, eds., 5th ed. 2001) discusses the law and practice of international institutions.
- Brierly, J.L., Law of Nations: An Introduction to the International Law of Peace (6th ed. 1963) provides a good explanation of traditional public international law.
- Shaw, Malcolm, International Law (5th ed. 2003) is a good introduction to the subject, and includes useful bibliographical references.
- Brownlie, Ian, Principles of Public International Law (6th ed.). This is a leading treatise on public international law.
- Buergenthal, Thomas, and Harold G. Maier, Public International Law in a Nutshell (3d ed. 2002) provides a basic introduction to public international law including research sources.
- Malanczuk, Peter, Akehurst's Modern Introduction to International Law (8th rev. ed. 2002) is a textbook with an historical perspective on international law.

- Index to Foreign Legal Periodicals. Published four times a year, this index gives access by author and subject to periodical articles and essays from countries other than the U.S. and those in the British Commonwealth. An online version is available by subscription; coverage begins in 1993.
- Public International Law: A Current Bibliography of Books and Articles. Published twice a year, this is a classified list of publications reviewed the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany. This is a good source for non-U.S. publications. Organized by a public international law classification system. It's also available on the Institute's website.
- PAIS International in Print (UI access only). This index provides access to books, pamphlets, documents and articles published world-wide on subjects such as economics, public policy and international relations.
- Current Law Index and Index to Legal Periodicals (Law access only) index law journals from the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand. Available on LegalTrac (Law access only), the online version of Current Law Index; coverage begins in 1980. Also available in LexisNexis and Westlaw (both services are password protected).
- Contents Pages from Law Reviews and Other Scholarly Journals. A searchable database of tables of contents from more than 750 law reviews and other scholarly publications related to the law, published in the U.S. and abroad.
- International Political Science Abstracts. Indexes journals related to political science.
- Legal Journals Index. Covers legal journals published in the UK and Europe. Available on the Web (print version discontinued in 1999) and WESTLAW (password restricted).
- Legal Resource Index (a/k/a LegaTrac - Law access only). Indexes journals published in the U.S., Canada, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Australia. Available on LexisNexis and Westlaw (both services are password restricted). Print version is Current Law Index.
- RAVE provides references to articles and decisions in European law and public international law, arranged by subject. Coverage began in 1995. Citations are in various languages. Access the citations through a systematic index (by law classification) or through alphabetical index. Note that this website has not been updated in quite some time.
- Social Science Index. Indexes social science journals.
- Szladits, Charles, A Bibliography on Foreign and Comparative Law: Books and Articles in English (1955-1989), continued by Szladits' Bibliography on Foreign and Comparative Law: Books and Articles in English (1990-). These are the most comprehensive bibliographies of books and articles in English dealing with foreign, comparative and international law.

- Treaties in Force (TIF) (1950-) annual publication listing all U.S. treaties and agreements still in force. Includes both bilateral and multilateral treaties and, when available, references to U.S.T. and T.I.A.S. citations. Entries arranged by country and subject. Available in the subscription databases LexisNexis (INTLAW; USTIF), Westlaw and HeinOnline.
- Treaty Actions are issued by the State Department. Treaty Actions contain current information on bilateral and multilateral treaties and agreements. Good for updating TIF.
- United States Treaty Index comprehensive source for U.S. treaty information. There are subject, chronological, and country indexes. Index provides citations to various full-text sources: U.S.T., T.I.A.S., Treaties and Other International Agreements of the United States (mentioned below). The set is supplemented by Current Treaty Index. (Available on HeinOnline Law access only)
- Treaties and Other International Agreements of the United States (often cited to as Bevans) is one of the best sources for older treaties and agreements. (Available on HeinOnline Law access only)
- Statutes at Large (cited to as Stat.) (1789-1950). Treaties were published here until 1950. Also available in the subscription databases LexisNexis and Westlaw (both services password protected).
- Treaties and Other International Acts Series (cited to as T.I.A.S.) (1946-date) is the first official publication of new treaties and agreements -- slip treaties -- and is later bound in U.S.T. There is a lag time of about 8 or 9 years. (Available on HeinOnline Law access only)
- United States Treaties and Other International Agreements (cited to as U.S.T.) (1950-date) is the official source for U.S. treaties and agreements. Unfortunately, there is about a 20 year lag time. (Available on HeinOnline Law access only)
- Treaties in Force-Annual State Department publication lists/summarizes US treaties and agreements still in force; arranged by country and subject; includes both bi- and multilateral treaties (Available on HeinOnline Law access only)

- Treaties in Force Official State Department-produced index to U.S. treaties currently in force.
- Treaty Actions (updates Treaties in Force) Provides latest information on U.S. treaties and includes information about new parties to international conventions. Retrospective information is also provided.
- US Senate Website, Legislative Actions, Treaties Lists treaties received from the President during the current Congress; provides information about committee referrals.
- Thomas Treaties website provides some information for locating treaty documents from 90th Congress to the present. Search by Congress, treaty document number, word/phrase, or by type of treaty. Some full-text treaties are available.
- LexisNexis (password restricted) (INTLAW; USTRTY) contains the full-text of ratified and unratified treaties and international agreements, where the United States is a party or signatory, from 1776 to present.
- Westlaw (password restricted) (USTREATIES) provides access to treaties and agreements from the State Dept. as well as the Senate; coverage varies.
- Avalon Project "The Avalon Project will mount digital documents relevant to the fields of Law, History, Economics, Politics, Diplomacy and Government. We do not intend to mount only static text but rather to add value to the text by linking to supporting documents expressly referred to in the body of the text." The site includes documents from pre 18th Century to the present.

- United Nations Cumulative Treaty Index: The comprehensive index to U.N. treaties, containing numerical, chronological, country, and subject lists. Updated by CD-ROM. Law Stacks KZ171 .U512 1999. (N.B.: The index included with the United Nations Treaty Series (U.N.T.S.) is not as user-friendly).
- Multilateral Treaty Calendar. Law Stacks KZ118 .W55 1998
- Consolidated Treaty Series (often cited to as C.T.S. or Consol. T.S., Law Stacks JX120 .P352), starts in 1648
- International Legal Materials (cited to as I.L.M., Law Stacks JX68 .I54) publishes selected treaties and agreements. Also available on LexisNexis (ILM), Westlaw (ILM and ILM-INDX), and HeinOnline (Law access only). ILM is a hearty perennial, with one disadvantage: Begins in 1962.
