The Computer Lab is located in Room 174 on the first floor of the Law Library. It is open during regular library hours except during closed training sessions. A monthly calendar is posted outside the computer lab listing reserved times. Please consult the class schedule before entering.
Instructors can reserve the Computer Lab by contacting Darlene Kaskie, Student Computer Services Librarian.
The Law Library supplies 41 desktops for law student use; 21 of these are located in the Computer Lab (Room 174) and 20 are located in locked carrels on the ground floor. These workstations are restricted to law students who sign on with their Hawk ID username and password. To use the ground floor carrels, you also need to stop at the Circulation Desk and borrow a key.
Report any workstation problems or questions to Student Computing staff.
Each student workstation in the library is equipped with Microsoft 7, Microsoft Office 2007, Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Adobe Acrobat Reader. Consult the Start menu to access shortcuts to frequently used programs and websites such as the Law Library Electronic Resources page, ISIS, and HawkMail.
Adobe Professional is available for law student use on two workstations in Special Services (Room 130) and can be used with the attached flatbed scanners to create PDF images of documents such as transcripts. Microsoft Word 2007 also allows you to create PDF images from Word files.
The Student Computing staff supports University of Iowa licensed software including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office and antivirus software.
Print Lab
The Print Lab is located in Room 126 on the first floor of the Law Library. Three paper colors are available for printing: white (LawWhite), red (LawRed), and blue (LawBlue).
Print Accounts
The College of Law Library network printing system is separate from the University of Iowa IT printing system. Printing costs 10 cents per side. Students must prepay before printing by purchasing a Print Fund card at the Circulation Desk. The Print fund cards are available in increments of $1, $5, $10 & $20. Each Print Fund card has a unique code with an expiration date. Students log into the PaperCut web site with their Hawk ID and password and enter the code to activate the printing funds. A step-by-step guide for adding the funds from the card to your account is available here (PDF*). The Law Library's networked printers duplex by default but students may choose to print on a single side of the paper by following these instructions.
Law students can check their printing account balances at any time by signing on to any workstation in the computer lab or ground floor carrels. After logging on, a window automatically displays the student's printing account balance. For more information on using PaperCut, download this guide (PDF*).
Student Computer Workstations
Law students with sufficient funds can print to the LawWhite, LawRed, or LawBlue printers in the library's print lab using the Microsoft Office Button print menu available through every Computer Lab or ground floor computer carrel workstation. A dedicated printing workstation is also located inside the Print Lab in Room 126.
Student Laptops
Law students can install the Law Library network printers on their personal laptops for the convenience of printing directly to the law school printers. The print drivers can only be installed on laptops running Windows Vista or 7. To install and configure the network print drivers, select the appropriate operating system from the list below and follow the instructions.
Currently, the Law Library printing account software is not available for Macs. Mac laptop owners wishing to print to the Law Library network printers must use the workstations in the Computer Lab or in the ground floor carrels.
See the LexisNexis Services and Westlaw Services pages for information on printing from those research systems.
Students using the Law Library workstations in the Computer Lab or the ground floor carrels should not save files to the computer's hard drive since files on the hard drive are periodically deleted. Instead, students should use one of the following options for saving work:
- Save to a USB flash drive (a.k.a. memory stick or thumb drive) that you can plug into the left side of the monitor or the front of the computer tower.
- Save to your SAFE space. This appears as the H: drive on library workstations. Files saved to your SAFE space are accessible from any library computer workstation you log into. Files saved to your SAFE space can also be accessed from off-campus through http://myfiles.uiowa.edu/.
- Save to a CD/DVD. A combo CD/DVD burner drive is available on all student workstations. Instructions (PDF*) on how to burn a CD or DVD are available for download as a PDF Acrobat file.
For help with saving, please contact a Student Computing staff member.
Two flatbed scanners are available free of charge to College of Law Students in Special Services. Instructions for using these scanners are located at the scanning workstation. Scanned documents may be sent over email or a flash drive. Please ask a Student Computing staff member in Room 130 if you need assistance.
To keep printing accounts and personal files safe and secure, law students should always log off the workstations located in the Computer Lab and in the ground floor carrels. Also remember to unplug any USB flash drives and to take any other personal items with you. Lost and Found items are retained at the Circulation Desk until the end of the week
Security questions or concerns may be addressed by contacting a Student Computing staff member or visiting the ITS Security Center website.
