Symposium Abstract
This Symposium begins with “Facing Tyranny with Justice: Alternatives to War in the Confrontation with Iraq,” by George E. Bisharat. The article explores the course of illegal actions the U.S. has taken against Iraq, offering critiques on the stances in support of the invasion of Iraq and alternatives to war that might foster better relations with Iraq in the future. Following is “Sustainable Economic Development: What the World Owes Africa, and What Africa Owes Itself,” by Hunter R. Clark, which explores how nations once sympathetic to the United States have become hostile to it. It discusses different foreign perceptions of America and how America has failed to serve the interests of Africa and other poorer countries who could potentially threaten America. Following is “Racism or Realpolitik? U.S. Foreign Policy and the HIV/AIDS Catastrophe in Sub-Saharan Africa,” by David P. Fidler. This article criticizes the United States for not taking an active role in the HIV/AIDS crisis that rampages in Africa that posits that the U.S.’s indifference is rooted in racism or a belief that it has no pressing political needs to assist Africa with the problem.
“America’s Face to the World:” The Department of State, Arab-Americans, and Diversity in the Wake of 9/11,” by Michael L. Krenn, details the U.S. Department of State’s historical treatment of race and ethnicity issues in light of the Sept. 11th attacks, and predicts that Arab- and Muslim- Americans will face difficulties in the upcoming years given the track record of the Department. Catherine A. Rogers, in “Proposals to Expel Palestinians from the Occupied Territories as Catalyst for a Civil Adjudication Campaign,” describes how Israel has threatened to “transfer” Palestinians from West Bank and how that could contribute to instability in the Middle East and the undermining of Palestinian rights. She then discusses whether an international adjudication campaign would solve this threat. Victor C. Romero, in “Decoupling “Terrorist” from “Immigrant:” An Enhanced Role for the Federal Courts Post 9/11,” explores immigration law in connection to national security and terrorism while pointing out that the courts have an important role in preserving individual rights in a time of foreign war. Cheryl L. Wade contributes an essay entitled, “The Impact of U.S. Corporate Policy on Women and People of Color,” and Josephine Gittler contributes a commentary, “The American Drug War, Material Substance Abuse and Child Protection: A Commentary.” James Thuo Gathii, in “The Structural Power of Strong Pharmaceutical Patent Protection in U.S. Foreign Policy” comments on the U.S. stances on HIV/AIDS in relation to patent protection for pharmaceuticals, one being in favor of strong patent protection and the other centered on a humanitarian approach. In “Racism and U.S. Immigration Law: Prospects for Reform After “9/11?”” discusses the history and problems with U.S. immigration problems as well as several reform movements and civil rights acts. Also included is an essay by Aracely Muñoz Contreras, “Girls in America: Sex and Deviancy in the Age of HIV/AIDS.”
