Symposim 1997: From Class to Community: Reading Our Rights, Writing the Wrongs

Symposium Abstract

"Bilingual Education, Immigration, and the Culture of Disinvestment," by Rachel F. Moran discusses federalism and its impact on bilingual education in different states, as well as the politics of bilingual education in those states. "Academic Freedom and Freedom of Speech: Communicating the Curriculum," by William G. Buss, discusses the constitutional freedom of teachers in academic decisionmaking. Martha S. West, in "Equitable Funding of Public Schools Under State Constitutional Law," writes about school finance reform, legislative acts concerning such reform, and different states strategies with respect to such reform. "Transformative Desegregation: Liberating Hearts and Minds," by Wendy Brown Scott, advocates desegregation of the curriculum and describes the strategies for and barriers in the way of desegregation.

Heriberto Godina, in "The Violation of Mexican American Students’ Educational Rights: A Midwestern Ethnography" writes about the disparities between the educator’s and legal professional’s approach in confronting the problems of the Mexican American student. Gerald L. "Jerry" Brown, Reeve Love, and Bradley Scott also contribute "An Historical Overview of Indian Education and Four Generations of Desegregation" which chronicles the impact of the Civil Rights Act, desegregation, and access to traditional curricula.

Jennifer E. Horan contributes the Student Note "When sleep at last has come": Controlling the Disposition of Dead Bodies for Same-Sex Couples," along with "ABA Accreditation: Educational Standards and Its Focus on Output Requirements" and "A New Category of "Color": Analyzing Albinism Under Title VII and the Americans with Disabilities Act" by Denise Rothbardt and Sara Scott, respectively.
