Human Rights Employment, Grant, and Study Abroad Opportunities:

DAVIS-PUTTER SCHOLARSHIP FUND

The Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund provides grants to students actively working for peace and justice. These need-based scholarships are awarded to those able to do academic work at the university level and who are part of the progressive movement on the campus and in the community. Early recipients worked for civil rights, against McCarthyism, and for peace in Vietnam. Recent grantees have been active in the struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression; building the movement for economic justice; and creating peace through international anti-imperialist solidarity. $8,000 scholarships are awarded. 2008 deadline has passed. 2009 applications must be postmarked no later than April 1, 2009. EQUAL JUSTICE FOUNDATION GRANT PROGRAM
- University of Iowa law students with a public interest summer internship/externship may apply for a 2009 EJF summer grant. Look for application deadline in the spring. MIDWEST COALITION FOR HUMAN RIGHTS
- The Midwest Coalition for Human Rights, a funding source and internship clearinghouse for U of MN law students, is having a hard time filling all of their summer human rights (fully funded) internships. Their website is www.midwesthumanrights.org and the internships page currently says "check back for more details." So, if you're interested in being in the Twin Cities this summer, you can keep checking the website throughout the next couple of weeks, or just shoot an email over to someone there. Apparently they're kind of surprised at the lack of applicants and would be very willing to extend these opportunities to U of Iowa students.
THE PUBLIC INTEREST LAW INITIATIVE (PILI)
- PILI sponsors a Summer Internship Program for first and second year law students. Each summer, PILI funds dozens of internships at public interest law agencies in the Chicago metropolitan area. The program is open to law students from across the country. The stipend for 10 weeks work is $4,500.
- PILI ensures quality supervision by experienced lawyers at the agencies, and provides a lunch-time educational program. The program seeks to have law students work at and learn about legal institutions serving the public interest, and to engender a life-long participation in public interest law.

IP LAW DIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIP
- Finnegan Henderson Diversity Scholarship will provide financial support to qualified students from underrepresented minority groups who have demonstrated a commitment to pursuing a career in IP law. http://www.finnegan.com.
HUMAN RIGHTS CAMPAIGN LAW FELLOWS
- As the nation's largest lesbian and gay political organization, the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) is dedicated to ending discrimination, securing equal rights and protecting the health and safety of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) Americans. The HRC Legal Department represents the organization on cutting-edge issues before all three branches of Federal government, our membership and the media. It also provides comprehensive corporate legal services to HRC and its Boards of Directors and Governors.
- HRC appoints up to four full-time (37.5 hours/week) or part-time (12 hours/week) Law Fellows for the spring and fall semesters and four full-time summer Law Fellows. Law Fellows work with HRC attorneys, outside counsel with major national law firms, lobbyists, organizational allies, and Congressional and White House staff members on legislative, regulatory and internal corporate matters. Practice areas include Constitutional, contract, criminal, education, employment, disability, family, benefits, tax, healthcare, immigration, intellectual property, media, military, and real estate law.

STUDY ABROAD IN THE NETHERLANDS
- Join Whittier Law School’s Distinguished Professors John Heilman and Patricia Leary to launch a brand new summer abroad law program in The Netherlands. Professor Heilman is the Program Director, and he has chosen to create this unique opportunity to study law in Amsterdam because it is a city of tolerance and diversity and an ideal location to study national and international issues regarding the gay and lesbian communities. Whittier’s new Summer Abroad Program in Amsterdam will focus entirely on sexual orientation and the law. To our knowledge, this will be the first summer program with an exclusive focus on sexual orientation issues, and while many schools now offer a course on sexual orientation and the law, our Summer Program will give students an opportunity to explore these issues in greater depth.

IRAN HUMAN RIGHTS DOCUMENTATION CENTER (IHRDC) INTERNSHIPS
- The IHRDC (www.iranhrdc.org) is an autonomous and non-partisan organization that works to remedy a deficit in the systematic, objective and analytical documentation of the human rights situation in the Islamic Republic of Iran since the 1979 revolution. The IHRDC is based on the view that creating such authoritative and accessible record with help raise public awareness of accountability and rule of law, and is essential for a peaceful transition to democratic rule and long-term national reconciliation. The IHRDC welcomes those interested in its mandate and goals to apply for an internship at the Center in New Haven, CT.
  
  Interns will perform the following tasks, among others:
  a. Conduct research on topics such as murder, torture, gender-related violence, disappearances, extra-judicial killings;
  b. Focus their research on either the law or the facts or both, depending on their educational background;
  c. Systematically gather, categorize and compile human rights related documents issued by governments, media, non-governmental organizations and other relevant bodies; and
  d. Contribute to the development of a human rights database and analyzer.

HUMANITY IN ACTION
- Humanity in Action sponsors six summer programs on minority and human rights issues in Europe and the United States.
- HIA selects a total of 62 students from U.S. colleges and universities to participate in the 2007
  programs. It welcomes applicants from all academic disciplines who are
  actively seeking new perspectives on minority issues. Fellows are
  selected on the basis of academic achievement, leadership ability, and commitment
  to human rights and minority issues. The 2007 summer programs will take
  place in Amsterdam, Berlin, Copenhagen, New York, Paris, and Warsaw. To ensure
  participation of all qualified applicants, HIA pays virtually all of the
  costs of participation.
- Humanity in Action is a New York-based not-for-profit organization
  founded in 1998. HIA believes that an important test of a genuine
  democracy is how it treats its racial, ethnic, and religious minorities. It also
  believes that the commitment to democratic values and the protection of
