YEAR-LONG CALENDAR OF EJF EVENTS
ONGOING:
-
Book Sales and Donations: Calling
all law students, law professors, etc! Donate your used casebooks and
outlines to EJF. EJF sells the used materials at discount and all the
money goes to support public interest clerkships. - Got required books for Spring 2009? View the ones we have (and how much you can save) here!
View the full booklist and availability here.
Contact the EJF email if you are interested in buying, have questions, or want to donate your used books.
- "Donate a Day" Program: EJF
encourages law students with paid summer jobs to donate a full or half
day’s pay to EJF. All money raised through this pledge drive will go
towards EJF summer grants for students working in unpaid summer
internships at government agencies and public interest organizations.
- To donate, or if you’d like more information, please contact Lindsay McAfee.
"Stay With a Friend" Program: The
“Stay with a Friend” program is a partnership between the students, the
EJF, Career Services office, and employers that interview during Iowa’s
on-campus interviewing. Students that elect to forgo a night or two at
a hotel on a ‘fly-back’ interview, staying with a friend or family
member instead, will help send the money allocated to the hotel stay to
the EJF for public interest clerkships.
- General Fundraising Committee: The
General Fundraising Committee reaches out to businesses and individuals
to help raise money for EJF sponsored public interest clerkships. If
you’d like to donate to EJF, please visit EJF's donation page. Pay attention to the website for updates on volunteer opportunities.
OCTOBER:
College of Law Public Interest Auction: Beginning with Dean Carolyn Jones’s arrival in the fall of 2004, the Equal Justice Foundation and the Iowa Student Bar Association have co-sponsored the College of Law Public Interest Auction to raise money for public interest clerkships. Items range from monthly cookie deliveries to dinners with professors to theater and concert tickets. Alumni, current law students, faculty, staff and members of the local community attend this fascinating event held each fall in Iowa City.
- The 2008 Auction raised over $17,000 for public interest fellowships!
The Auction Planning Committee will begin planning the 2009 Auction very soon. If you would like to become involved, have questions, or you would like to make a donation, please contact Kiri deLaubenfels or Naeda Erickson.
-
Mr. Iowa Law: Every fall, the EJF holds its Mr. Iowa Law competition. A satirical event, Iowa law school students make fun of themselves, and beauty pageants generally, and perform talents on stage at a local establishment. Voting is done by donating money to the contestant(s) of one's choice. All the proceeds go to EJF! In Spring 2008, Mr. Jerome Coenic-Taylor dazzled the crowd with his amazingly breakdancing skills. The fun never stops with this ridiculously comical event.
- EJF congratulates David Wiest (2L), crowned Mr. Iowa Law 2008 on October 1 at The Mill.
JANUARY:
- Faculty/Student Chili Cookoff: Whoa Nelly!!! The gloves come off and the baking mitts are on in this fun spring competition between professors, staff and student journal groups. Those interested in taking others’ chili to task and putting their own chili on display fill crock pots galore as onlookers taste and evaluate. All the money raised goes to EJF public interest clerkships.
-
The date of the 2009 Chili Cookoff will be announced soon!
If you would like to volunteer to work this event, have a crock pot to submit, or have general questions please email Alena Vazquez or Jude Pannell.
FEBRUARY:
- LawLaw Palooza: In
the spring, over a decade ago, law students John Norris, Jay Byers,
Doug O’Brien and David Hayes began LawLawPalooza on the front lawn of
their house. It was a rainy day, but the law school bands kept playing
their music, with dozens of friends and fellow students, through the
fog, and until the early morning. A few hundred dollars were raised
that day and donated to a women’s shelter. From that point forward, the
money from this event has been used for EJF public clerkship grants.
Alumni bands, current law students and friends of the law school
community provide their musical talents every year to help raise money.
Previous year’s acts have involved folk music, soft and hard rock, rap,
etc. Whether you are a law student or simply in the area for the night,
swing by and attend LawLawPalooza.
-
- The date/time/schedule of performers has yet to be announced for the 16th Annual LawLawPalooza!
