David Baker began his legal career with White, Wenzel and Piersall in Cedar Rapids, Iowa in 1979. His primary practice, at that time, was a general practice with an emphasis in tax, estate planning and corporate. He joined Elderkin, Pirnie, VonLackum and Elderkin in 1983 where he continued to practice in the tax and corporate area. His practice gradually evolved away from a business practice to a litigation practice, initially bankruptcy and later insurance defense. On January 1, 1989, he started a new firm with John Riccolo under the name of Riccolo & Baker, P.C. This firm practiced almost exclusively in the area of litigation. Cases included personal injury, professional negligence, construction, real estate, commercial questions, employment issues, and workers’ compensation. He was involved in over 30 trials of which approximately 20 were solo jury trials, six were trials in which he participated with another attorney, and six were bench trials. In addition to his litigation practice, he has an extensive appellate practice as well as experience in numerous administrative and bankruptcy hearings where evidence is taken
Justice Baker became a district court judge for the Sixth Judicial District in the State of Iowa on January 3, 2005. He was appointed to the Iowa Court of Appeals on December 23, 2006 and then to the Iowa Supreme Court in 2008 where he served until December 31, 2010.
