Public Interest

Position: Managing Attorney - MUNA Legal Clinic, Iowa Coalition Against Domestic Violence - Des Moines, Iowa
Salary: $44,400 plus benefits (Grant funded through the Legal Assistance Victims Grant from the Department of Justice.)

Requirements: Licensed to practice law in Iowa preferred. Strong writing and editing skills, preference for bi-lingual candidates. Demonstrated leadership skills. Ability to work with a diverse population. Demonstrated public speaking and professional training capabilities. Demonstrated ability to establish effective working relationships with government representatives and policy makers. Ability to travel throughout Iowa as needed and to attend national conferences/trainings. Knowledge and understanding of civil and immigration law and practice related to domestic violence. Experience in social justice, systems advocacy, and social change work. Understanding of issues of cultural and socioeconomic diversity as they apply to domestic violence prevention, intervention, and services.
Duties: Manage staff attorneys' case load, assign cases, facilitate weekly staff meetings, provide technical assistance to staff attorneys. Assist battered immigrant women in immigration and family law proceedings. Provide on-going technical legal assistance and training to domestic violence centers, Legal Aid, other community agencies, attorneys, and victim service providers, community based organizations and immigration organizations. Coordinate supervision of interns from the Iowa City School of Law and Drake Law School representing clients with immigration and domestic abuse cases. Work collaboratively with the Iowa Coalition Against Sexual Assault, Iowa Legal Aid and the Private Bar of Iowa.

Position: Staff Attorney/Legal Director - American Civil Liberties Union of Eastern Missouri
Salary: Commensurate with experience within the context of ACLU-EM salary structure. Benefits.

Requirements: J.D. and admission to the Missouri Bar or admission within one year of hire. Commitment to the preservation and vigorous enforcement of the civil liberties of all Missourians. Excellent research, writing and analytical skills. Organizational skills. Computer legal research and processing skills. Strong self-motivation and ability to manage multiple deadlines. Willingness to work beyond the 9 to 5 hours of the normal workday, including evening and weekend meetings and events. Strong interpersonal skills, including the ability to work collaboratively and the ability to work in a small office with little support staff. Some travel required. Mostly in-state.
Duties: Work under the supervision of the Executive Director who is responsible for the overall program of the ACLU of Missouri. The Staff Attorney/Legal Director will administer and coordinate all aspects of the ACLU of Missouri's legal program, including the identification of civil liberties violations in the state and the development of strategies to respond to them. When appropriate, the Staff Attorney/Legal Director will serve as co-counsel on cases with volunteer attorneys or national ACLU attorneys. The attorney may be required, on rare occasions, to have sole responsibility for litigating a case.
