Deadline: October 28, 2005
Requirements: Very strong communication skills, written and verbal. Substantial experience in legal research and writing (law review, moot court brief, private or public clerkship or internship, etc.). Completion of introductory bankruptcy course in law school. (This is mandatory; advanced bankruptcy seminar favored, and coursework in debtor-creditor relations, UCC, real estate finance and/or federal jurisdiction also very desirable.) Familiarity with the various Adobe document applications and ability to work with them in the Windows environment, or ability to gain them quickly. Graduation from law school and completion of bar examination by employment date. Sense of humor, flexibility, eclectic outside interests, ability to work closely in a small team, and coolness-under-fire. Two or more years of post-college, pre-law school employment experience in the "real world" (business, secondary education, paralegal practice, or accounting) strongly favored, though not a strict prerequisite.
Duties: Sole clerk responsible to one judge in a specialized federal court. Duties include the ones typical for a judicial law clerk in a trial court, including attendance at hearings and trials; research and writing of bench memoranda, orders, draft opinions, and other materials; contact with attorneys and the public; and general assistance to the Court. Consistent with the Court's reliance on an all-electronic case record, they will also include some case-management duties, including review of moving and responsive documents and proposed orders, pre-hearing processing of proposed orders in electronic format, and completion of electronic-format minute sheets.

Position: Staff Law Clerks - United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit, Chicago, Illinois (two-year term starting in August 2006)
Salary: ---
Deadline: (Post until Spring 2006)
Requirements: Exceptional academic credentials and possess superior analytical, research and writing skills. Law review or moot court experience is preferred.
Duties: Perform legal research, prepare bench memoranda and draft merits opinions on a broad spectrum of federal cases subject to oral argument at the Court. This written work must meet the most exacting standards of excellence demanded of all law clerks at this Court. Staff law clerks work with all the judges of the entire Court rather than a single judge. They are therefore exposed to multiple judicial philosophies, styles and backgrounds. In addition, staff law clerks assist the judges in resolving substantive motions that address complex questions of civil procedure or seek preliminary or emergency relief. This affords the clerks a unique insight into the rhythm and phases of appellate litigation. Finally, staff law clerks assist three-judge panels in weekly deliberative conferences on cases not subject to oral argument. This exposes the clerks to a decision-making process unavailable to chambers clerks.
To Apply: Submit cover letter, resume, law school transcript, two unedited writing samples and two letters of recommendation to:
Michael K. Fridkin, Senior Staff Attorney
United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit
219 South Dearborn Street
Chicago, Illinois 60604
