British Legal Methods Clinical Program
Enrollment in this program is limited to fifteen students per semester. Students enrolled in the London Law Consortium may obtain three hours academic credit by participating in this clinical course. Students will learn about the British legal practice by studying the work of barristers or solicitors. The students also will be supervised and evaluated by a full-time faculty member from a consortium law school, and will participate as a group in a weekly seminar devoted to their externship experience. Students in the British Legal Methods Clinical program are required to enroll in the one-hour English Legal System course.
The educational purpose of British Legal Methods is to offer a clinical setting within which American law students can study English law and practice, thereby providing a practical as well as a theoretical basis for comparing the American and British legal systems. Specific educational objectives of the program include instruction in the professional skills and responsibilities of British lawyers, the study of legal traditions and institutions, and the examination of trial practice and procedure. Through personal observation and experience, students will discover the common legal traditions shared by America and Britain, as well as differences in professional responsibilities, practices and procedures.
