Students can get one-on-one advice and attend informative events from the Academic Achievement Program.
The College's Academic Achievement Program ("AAP") helps students maximize their academic potential as they make the transition from successful undergraduate careers to the unique challenge of law study. The services of the AAP are open to all, with a special emphasis on helping first-year students. AAP offers numerous services, including a program series for first-year students on legal study skills and exam-taking, practice exams, exam review sessions, and individual appointments for students. In addition, AAP co-sponsors and coordinates the First Year at Iowa (FYI) student mentoring program.
Students are encouraged to meet with the program director to discuss any issue related to the student's academic progress. The Academic Achievement Program can help law students in such areas as developing effective study skills, forming a schedule to maximize time, dealing with stress and anxiety, and improving test taking skills. In addition, AAP can refer students to campus and community resources when appropriate.
Students may make an appointment by e-mailing brian-r-farrell@uiowa.edu or calling 319-335-8273.
The Academic Achievement Program co-sponsors the First Year at Iowa ("FYI") student mentorship program in which an upper-class student volunteer serves as a mentor to a group of first-year students. The program provides first-year students with an additional support network of peers as well as the advice of an experienced law student. Upper-class mentors meet with the program director regularly and receive training in leadership techniques, diversity issues, and recognition of potential concerns.
