Students can get one-on-one advice and attend informative events from the Academic Achievement Program.

Academic Achievement Program

The College's Academic Achievement Program ("AAP") helps students maximize their potential through the development of the academic skills necessary to succeed in law school. The services of the AAP are open to all law students, with a special emphasis on helping first-year students as they make the transition from successful undergraduate careers to the unique challenge of law study.  The AAP director is available to meet one-on-one with students to discuss academic skills and strategies. Throughout the year, AAP offers large-group programs on legal study skills and exam-taking as well as practice exams and exam review sessions.  In the spring semester, AAP convenes a voluntary small-group workshop series for first year students.   AAP also coordinates the First Year at Iowa (FYI) program which connects incoming students with upper-class student leaders during orientation and throughout the first year.

Individual Appointments

Students are encouraged to meet with the program director to discuss academic skills issues. The Academic Achievement Program helps law students in such areas as class preparation, note-taking, outlining, time and stress management, exam preparation, and exam review strategies. In addition, AAP can refer students to campus and community resources when appropriate.

Students may make an appointment by e-mailing brian-r-farrell@uiowa.edu or calling 319-335-8273.

Program Schedule and Resources

A wide range of resources, including the schedule of programs for the current semester, is available to Iowa law students through the Academic Achievement Program’s Iowa Courses Online (ICON) course site.  Current Iowa law students can access reviews of law school guide books, academic skills tutorials, materials from live presentations, and over fifty old law school exams. To access the site, log into ICON and select “ongoing” from the drop-down semester list.

FYI Mentorship Program

The Academic Achievement Program coordinates the First Year at Iowa ("FYI") program.  FYI groups pair approximately ten first-year students with one or two upper-class student leaders and serve as the basis for a number of orientation activities.  FYI groups continue throughout the academic year and provide first-year students with a peer network as well as giving them access to the advice of an experienced law student. FYI group assignments are available on the AAP ICON site.
